Private Label Watches
April 4, 2008

So, I’ve been trying to acquire watch brands for the new store and think I might get what I want, but I haven’t been able to find another name brand that attacks the $400-1000 price point until I found out about private label watch brands.

Do any of you all have experience with private label watches? Are you selling watches made in America, with Swiss parts, stamped with your store names? Do customers care as long as they have Swiss parts? Here are some companies I found that do sell private label watches…here and here.

$400-$1000 is a very hard-fought price point that every single watch company is after right now, with big pushes from Seiko especially. Big market names like Movado, Victorinox, Wittnauer, Accutron, or Longines are well respected. Of course these national/worldwide brands are tapped first by the big companies as they are proven success stories. This makes it a difficult choice for small independents as they don't want to neccesarily have a case that mirrors all four jewelry stores or department stores in their local mall. I would think that a carefully designed private label collection may sell, but it will be much harder to justify the cost. One of the reasons "better" watches are selling right now is because of the brand and prestige recognition (especially with Movado). Personally, I could see a karat gold watch collection easily justifying its price tag (but it might even be too high priced), or perhaps a diamond-heavy collection, or even an automatic/mechanical skeleton-window stainless collection. Taking a look at those two companies you linked to, I was extremely turned off by them, especially Chrono AG (2nd link). Their designs are MUCH too generic and look either exactly like Timex, Seiko, or Fossil...nothing that could be priced at $400 to $1000. The perfect private label line should compliment your existing watch brands, as well as offering something your customers are actively asking/looking for, a style that speaks to them. Coming from department store beginings, I'd suggest considering a designer fashion brand with Swiss-made parts, such as Burberry's Heritage collection (nevermind who the parent company manufacturer is). What designers are popular in your area? For that matter, what watch brands are the hot buys locally?

Belaire is an independantly owned US company using Swiss movements. The watches are very well made. You will be proud to put your name on them. All you have to do is have your customer hold one in thier hand and a national big name brand in the other. It's sold.

When i still had a jewelry store, i too wanted a private label watch to compete against the massive advertising of Seiko, Citizen etc. I found my dream company in BELAIR watch Co. of New Jersey. The quality of the movements, cases and bands is beyond reproach. The service quality is monumental and fast and the price points allow you to be very competitive. As one customer put it when looking as watches, major brand and my private brand, he chose mine because he stated, that since i put my name on it, it must be the better watch

Hampden Watch in Chicago is an excellent company. I have never sold private label watches, but I have some friends in the industry who do very well with them. They offer their customers lifetime battery changes as an extra closing tool.

A lifetime guarantee for batteries would be an extra perk...as would complimentary repairs for the first __# years. Especially with karat gold timepieces, offering "full trade-in" value for your private label would be another plus. Still, consider this: most major mid-market jewelry chains and department stores dropped their private label watches a while ago, as it was far easier to pour money into Seiko/Citizen/Bulova/Movado's massive Co-Op advertising than to keep diverting sales to their private label.

I came across a site which sells luxury watches at affordable prices. It would have been a great Valentine’s gift; however my husband is not so crazy about watches. Anyway, they are selling these Swiss-made rolex replica watches. They are from Italy and the features are similar to those of the high quality Swiss Rolex watches, it is impossible to tell them apart. So if you want to enjoy the sophistication of Rolex but don’t want to spend too much, check out watchinstyle.com. I think this would make a great graduation gift. Plus there will be less worries of being stolen when wearing a rolex replica rather than the original one. LookRichForLess.com also sells other popular brands, so visit them now.
